Drive Unit Service
Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Coolant Retrofit Service
Service Range: $1,975 - $2,600 +tax
1-2 day turnaround time
2-year / 25,000 mile warranty
All Tesla LDUs are prone to failure due to a known flaw in the internal coolant manifold — a flaw that will lead to rotor bearing damage, fluid ingress, and eventual drive unit failure if not addressed. Our most requested service, the coolant delete retrofit, addresses this issue preventatively with a simple, proven, and cost-effective cap method.
We thoroughly inspect and clean all potentially impacted internal components during the process, extending the life of your existing unit and prevent future breakdowns.
Pricing depends on whether we need to disassemble the gearbox to correct damage to the internals.
All coolant deletes include replacing the rotor bearings with upgraded units - but if yours are in great shape, we won’t charge you.

Tesla LDU Rescue & Rebuild
Remote diagnostics
Service Range: $3,000 - $5,000
Includes Coolant Delete retrofit
Turnaround time varies based on condition and parts availability
2-year / 25,000 mile warranty
If your drive unit has failed, we offer a full-service recovery: comprehensive diagnostics, teardown, and component-level repair tailored to the root cause of failure. We carefully evaluate coolant ingress into the stator, inverter electronics, and all wiring, and only replace damaged components. Our in-house rebuild process restores function and reliability, with greater transparency and value than a factory swap.
Timing matters: To prevent irreversible damage from fluid intrusion, we recommend servicing failed LDUs within one week of the failure event.
If your vehicle has been sitting non-functional or was purchased as a non-starter, contact us for a custom quote.
We may also be able to repair other non-Tesla drive units with problems, such as a known issue with Chevy Bolt drive unit bearings. Contact us to discuss your car!
When rebuild or component-level repair is not the right answer, we also offer complete drive unit replacement. Some EV drive units are so reliable that they are affordable enough on the used market to make replacement the most efficient option, while others require closer evaluation. We review each failure case individually to recommend the most practical path forward for the vehicle, whether that means replacement, rebuild, or rescue work.

Battery Service
Our battery maintenance service starts with battery pack removal and includes a thorough inspection of common service points on the pack. This includes evaluation of umbrella valves, the pyro fuse cover, and rapid mate connectors and seals, followed by pack reinstallation. We also offer a battery health test from AVILOO
The primary reason to perform battery maintenance is to protect your Model S/X from water intrusion that can cause catastrophic battery failure if left unchecked. Tesla has engineered updated parts and procedures that we use to ensure your pack is healthy for years to come.

Tesla Model S/X Battery Maintenance
Tesla Model S/X: Open VSH Repair
If your Tesla Model S or Model X has failed while Supercharging or during a period of wide temperature swings, it may be due to an Open VSH condition.
In a nutshell, this failure is due to certain internal wiring on the battery modules being vulnerable to long term temperature stress.
The most vulnerable population of vehicles is 2019 - 2020 Long Range/Performance trims, as well as batteries on older S/X that have been replaced since 2021.
The good news is that this condition is fully repairable for significantly less than the cost of a replacement battery, and Great Lakes EV is working diligently to streamline our process to get your car in and out as fast as possible with your battery fully future-proofed from this failure moving forward - which is not necessarily the case for a replacement from Tesla.

Tesla Model S/X: BMB Failures
If you experience a battery failure on your 2012 - 2015 Tesla Model S, there is a good chance it’s due to corrosion on the Battery Management Boards (BMBs) inside the battery pack.
This failure is well-documented, and can be repaired by replacing the individual affected BMBs. The pack needs to be opened for us to perform the repair and inspect the entirety of the pack, ensuring there is no additional damage to the battery that may affect its long term health.

High-Voltage Battery Replacement
For batteries beyond repair, we offer used, tested HV packs, with proper installation and verification. We source from our own inventory or help locate the best available option. Every replacement includes a full inspection, installation, and software prep.
NOTE: As of March 2026, we are not offering 100kWh upgrades or replacements due to the endemic Open VSH flaw in most 100kWh battery packs. Contact us for more info.

Not all EV problems fit in a box. We handle the hard-to-pin-down issues and one-off repairs that most shops turn away. We are equipped to handle high-voltage and communications issues better than most.
We are NOT equipped to do the following work, and recommend you reach out to your OEM or a reputable neighborhood independent shop, as appropriate:
Tires
Alignments
Body work
800v repairs
Cosmetic/added function aftermarket modifications
Additionally, there are some Tesla repairs that are more economical to have performed by Tesla directly for various reasons, including:
Door handle repair/upgrades
Model S/X half-shafts
Infotainment upgrades
We do not install or recommend defeat devices, VIN-swapping, or dangerous code-clearing on ANY electric vehicle.
